Empowering teachers to create engaging and inclusive classrooms for every child.

Overview

Who Are TeachWell

Teachers in refugee and host community settings in Kenya often work in overcrowded classrooms with limited resources, supporting learners affected by displacement and climate shocks. These challenges can undermine teaching quality and children’s learning outcomes.

TeachWell is a USD 27 million, five-year programme improving education in Turkana and Garissa counties. Working collaboratively with the Ministry of Education, Teacher Service Commission and other government agencies, TeachWell supports teachers to deliver quality learning while strengthening education systems to be more inclusive, resilient, and responsive.

The programme provides a comprehensive Teacher Continuous Capacity Development (TCCD) package aligned with Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and Kenya Professional Teaching Standards (KePTS). It integrates play-based and inclusive teaching approaches with teacher wellbeing. TeachWell also supports safe and healthy school environments; including water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services.

Through teacher training, supporting implementation of Kenya's Competence Based Curriculum, and system-level collaboration, TeachWell supports teachers create engaging, inclusive learning environments where children can learn and thrive.

TeachWell is supported by the LEGO Foundation and the Grundfos Foundation, and is implemented by a consortium led by the International Rescue Committee (IRC), in partnership with Save the Children, Africa Population Health Research Centre (APHRC), RTI International, Lutheran World Federation and Film Aid Kenya.
